Question: I have an acer aspire one netbook (no modem) and a netgear wgr614 54mbps. do i need to buy a wireless modem?

Why are you buying a wireless modem? Plus, don't get a modem, you want a router, because it has a firewall. if you were running through a modem then an external attack is as easy as snapping your fingers. I suggest a D-Link or Linksys router. Everything else is dependant on budget and preference. But don't let the people at the store tell you that one is better than the other, there is no major difference.
